Captain Alphonso Davies will return to the lineup as the Canadian men's national soccer team seeks its first-ever World Cup victory against Qatar at BC Place on Thursday, June 18, 2026.

Head coach Jesse Marsch confirmed Wednesday that Davies is available after a hamstring injury sidelined him during Canada's opening 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina, which secured the nation's first-ever World Cup point.

"We'll see how the match goes and then make a decision on how we would choose to use him," said Marsch.

The return of Davies boosts a squad dealing with multiple roster disruptions.

Forward Promise David is recovering from a hip injury, while midfielder Marcelo Flores and defender Moïse Bombito were previously ruled out with long-term knee and leg injuries.

These absences allowed Jayden Nelson to join the roster after scoring against Uzbekistan earlier this month.

The updated lineup shifts Canada's tactical focus toward a high-intensity pressing system intended to challenge opponents physically on the pitch.

"I don't think it's always a bad thing to play with arrogance," said midfielder Niko Sigur. "I think we're at our best when we play with that swagger."

Sigur noted that Qatar displayed significant focus during its opening 1-1 draw against Switzerland, meaning the opponent cannot be underestimated despite making history four years ago as the first host nation to lose all three group matches.

"I think if we're at our best and we're all together, including guys off the bench and the starters, that we can give them a lot of trouble," said Sigur.
