Celebrity chef Ina Garten has unveiled her strategy for a relaxed Independence Day celebration, featuring a classic make-ahead holiday menu.

She shared the details through her Substack newsletter, offering a timeline to minimize hosting anxiety.

Three-Day Prep Timeline

Garten recommends beginning preparations three days before the event. On that day, she buys the ingredients and makes caramelized onions.

The day before the Fourth of July, she prepares the salads, bakes the cake, and mixes and forms the hamburger patties.

This leaves only minimal tasks for the holiday itself.

On July 4, the host simply needs to set a buffet table, make the cake frosting, and assemble the cake.

Garten suggests asking friends to help cook the burgers when they arrive, ensuring everyone has a cold beer or lemonade.

“Your friends will feel involved in the celebration, and no one has to panic about entertaining,” she wrote.

Menu Highlights

Garten's recommended spread includes hamburgers with caramelized onions, vegetable coleslaw, fresh corn salad, Julia Child's potato salad, and a berry-covered flag cake.

She emphasizes checking seasonings on make-ahead salads, as salt and pepper lose their flavor over time.

Reflections on Food and Love

During a recent appearance on the podcast “Your Mama's Kitchen,” Garten reflected on her childhood food experiences.

She described her mother's strict dietary rules against carbohydrates and butter, contrasting them with the philosophy she now embraces with her husband, Jeffrey.

“Cooking for people wasn't about love. It was about feeding them.

To me, when you cook for someone, it's about taking care of them,” she said.

Garten noted that her current lifestyle focuses on joy and abundance through food.

She upgraded her mother's simple parmesan chicken recipe by swapping canned vegetables for fresh greens and an arugula salad.

“Parmesan chicken is probably the thing I've made the most. It's the simplest,” she admitted.
