Argentina and England secured the top positions in their World Cup groups on Saturday, advancing to the round of 32 with decisive victories.
Lionel Messi came off the bench in the second half to score his sixth goal of the tournament, helping Argentina defeat Jordan 3-1 in Arlington, Texas.
The goal was Messi's 19th in World Cup history, extending his record as the all-time leading scorer.
He also became the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches.
Argentina finished atop Group J with a perfect record of three wins. They will face Cape Verde in the next round.
Cape Verde became the smallest nation ever to reach the knockout stage.
Austria secured second place in Group J after a dramatic 3-3 draw with Algeria, thanks to a stoppage-time equalizer by Sasa Kalajdzic.
Austria will now play Spain, while Algeria advanced as one of the best third-placed teams and will meet Switzerland.
Iran was eliminated.
In Group L, England beat Panama 2-0 at the New York New Jersey Stadium to claim first place.
Jude Bellingham opened the scoring in the 62nd minute and then assisted Harry Kane five minutes later.
England manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged the challenge posed by Panama. "It was what we expected: a tough match against a physical opponent," he said.
Tuchel praised his team's offensive output despite Panama's defensive approach.
"They are a difficult team to score against, and we were the only team to create this amount of chances and score twice."
Looking ahead, Tuchel expressed confidence. "We will step up.
The bigger the games get, the bigger we will get."
England will face the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Atlanta on Wednesday.
The DR Congo secured its first-ever World Cup victory, beating Uzbekistan 3-1 to advance as a best third-placed team from Group K.
Colombia topped Group K after a 0-0 draw with Portugal, which sends Portugal to face Croatia in the round of 32.
Croatia finished second in Group L behind England after a 2-1 win over Ghana, with goals from Petar Sucic and Nikola Vlasic.
The result eliminated Scotland and led to the immediate resignation of Scotland manager Steve Clarke. Croatia will play Portugal in Toronto on Thursday.
