A male paddleboarder has died after falling into the Paterswoldsemeer lake near Meerweg in Haren on Sunday afternoon, June 28, 2026.
Emergency services received a report at approximately 2:45 p. m.

about two individuals on a stand-up paddleboard, with one person suddenly disappearing under the water.
A large rescue operation was launched at the busy recreational lake south of Groningen. Police, ambulances, fire department dive teams, and a mobile medical team helicopter were deployed.
Responding police officers quickly retrieved the submerged man from the water and immediately began CPR alongside medical personnel.
However, the life-saving measures were unsuccessful.

“But help was no longer of any avail,” a police spokesperson said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after being pulled from the lake.
“We received a report that a person had fallen into the water,” the spokesperson explained. “A man fell off his supboard and then did not resurface.
Officers who were quickly on site managed to get the victim out of the water. They, assisted by medical staff, immediately started resuscitation.

Unfortunately, the help was no longer of any avail and the victim died at the scene.”
