A software update is causing thousands of BMW electric vehicles to display a false battery replacement warning.

The alert tells drivers to replace the battery, but BMW says nothing is actually wrong.

Over the past few days, many BMW i3 and i4 owners worldwide have seen the message: "Replace battery: You can continue driving.

Have the problem checked by your service center." The contradictory instruction has led to a surge in calls to dealerships.

Software Update Misfires

BMW traced the issue to a recent over-the-air software update that misfired.

The company confirmed that a system with an incorrect date triggered the false check control message.

"This situation is temporary and no immediate action is required by those customers arising from this issue — replacing the battery is not necessary," BMW stated.

The warning does not refer to the high-voltage battery pack, as some owners feared, but to the 12-volt battery.

BMW noted that if a real issue appeared with the high-voltage pack, owners likely would not be told they can continue driving.

BMW is working on a high-priority software fix. The warning message will automatically disappear once the update is rolled out.

In some markets, dealers have already begun informing customers about the issue.

The affected models include the i4 and the i3.

However, the original i3 hatchback never supported OTA updates for critical electrical systems, so the i3 involved is likely the electric version of the long-wheelbase 3-Series sold in China.
