The University of Wisconsin is moving to hire Shawn Eichorst as its next athletic director, according to reports from ESPN and On3 on June 30, 2026.

Eichorst currently serves as deputy athletic director and chief operating officer at the University of Texas, a role he has held since 2018.

He previously led athletic departments at Miami (2011-2012) and Nebraska (2012-2017).

The Wisconsin native returns to Madison, where he worked as a deputy athletic director under Barry Alvarez from 2006 to 2011.

He also served as athletic director at UW-Whitewater from 1999 to 2003.

The university is seeking a permanent replacement for Chris McIntosh, who left earlier this year to become deputy commissioner for strategy for the Big Ten Conference.

Marcus Sedberry has been serving as interim athletic director.

Alvarez praised Eichorst's background when he originally joined the Badgers staff two decades ago.

“He brings a lot to the table. He has been a college student-athlete and director of athletics, both at UW-Whitewater,” Alvarez said.

“He also is a proven Division IA athletic administrator. Being a native of Wisconsin, he knows our state.

We are getting a very well-rounded and bright person to join our staff.”

McIntosh reflected positively on his tenure with the Badgers before transitioning to his new conference role.

“To be able to work for the University of Wisconsin and certainly for the last five years as athletic director, to be able to pour everything I had into transitioning Wisconsin into a changing world, it’s just been an honor,” McIntosh said.
