The newly merged Bristol NHS Foundation Trust could concentrate its 24-hour emergency services into a single department at Southmead Hospital within the next decade, officials announced on July 1, 2026.

Chief Executive Maria Kane stated that the strategy aims to improve long-term sustainability following the merger of two major NHS trusts, creating an organization with 28,000 staff and a £2.6 billion budget.

Currently, the trust operates 24-hour emergency units at both Southmead Hospital and the Bristol Royal Infirmary, alongside Weston General Hospital, which shuts overnight.

Kane emphasized that clinical safety remains the absolute priority before any final structural reallocations occur across the region.

"It's a possibility," she said, noting that similar centralizations have proven successful in other parts of the UK and internationally.

The trust plans to consult extensively with emergency services and evaluate external urgent care capacities before shifting resources.

"We would want to really check out the sustainability of that… we absolutely need to make sure that we work with ambulance colleagues… and first and foremost, to make sure there is enough service outside the hospital in urgent care," Kane said.

Physical requirements of future healthcare infrastructure remain a central part of the trust's ongoing logistical analysis.

"If we are putting more services outside the hospital… is the footprint that we have today the same footprint we will need in the future?"

Kane asked.

Local governance bodies are collaborating with the trust to address regional transit limitations that could impact patient accessibility.
