India captain Shreyas Iyer announced a spin-heavy bowling attack for the first T20 international against England at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

The decision was confirmed during the pre-match toss as India looks to adapt quickly to the local playing conditions following their recent tour of Ireland.

"This is a great opportunity for us. It's my second series as a captain, so excited," Iyer said.

The visitors completed a practice session ahead of the match to familiarize themselves with the stadium environment.

"We got what we wanted. We got a session of practice yesterday to get acclimatised to the surroundings.

Looking forward to an exciting one," Iyer added.

Iyer emphasized that the team is focusing forward rather than dwelling on past performances against previous opponents.

"Ireland series is history. We need to learn a lot from that series.

We know how England have been playing, we know their strengths and weaknesses," he said.

The skipper noted the visible grass on the Chester-le-Street pitch, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the playing surface.

"There's a decent amount of grass on the wicket. Can't predict how the wicket is going to play," Iyer said.

The team strategy relies on a balance of slow bowling options alongside a pair of fast bowlers for the encounter.

"We're going with three spinners - Axar as an all-rounder - and two seamers," Iyer confirmed.
