Apple is rolling out significant changes to its iCloud storage services and Shared Albums feature with the upcoming iOS 27 update.

The overhaul brings new benefits for paid subscribers while altering long-standing storage policies for shared photo collections.

Enhanced Features for iCloud+ Subscribers

Users on paid iCloud+ and Apple One plans will gain expanded daily access to advanced Apple Intelligence tools, including the revamped Image Playground app.

The upgrade enables photorealistic image generation powered by Google Gemini models.

Daily usage limits are being implemented due to the high operational costs of the server-based AI features.

Most subscription tiers will receive increased access, except for the entry-level 50GB plan.

HomeKit Secure Video cameras are also getting new AI capabilities within the Home app for paid users.

Compatible cameras will automatically generate video descriptions, enable searchable clips, and highlight important moments.

These features are expected to require at least a 200GB iCloud+ plan or eligible Apple One Family and Premier subscriptions.

Shared Albums Storage Policy Shift

Apple is restructuring how iCloud Shared Albums use storage.

In the iOS 27 developer beta, content added to updated shared collections will now count toward the album creator's storage quota.

This ends a decade-long policy that allowed up to 5,000 media files to be stored without affecting personal cloud space.

The new system requires users to activate iCloud Photos to create long-term shared albums.

A free alternative remains available: temporary shared albums that do not count against storage quotas but expire after 30 days unless saved locally by participants.

Cross-platform functionality is also improving.

Android users can now actively join iCloud Shared Albums, contributing and uploading full-resolution photos and videos through a supported web experience, rather than just viewing via public links.
