Ajax has reached an agreement in principle to sign Marc-Andre ter Stegen on a one-year loan from Barcelona, with the German goalkeeper expected to arrive in Amsterdam next week for a medical examination.

The deal was finalized on Friday, July 3, 2026, according to sources, but conflicting reports have emerged regarding the financial terms of his salary.

Salary Coverage Dispute

Spanish outlet Marca reported that Ajax will cover just over 10 percent of Ter Stegen's 20 million euro annual salary, with Barcelona paying the remainder.

In contrast, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed on X that Ajax will pay the vast majority of the wages.

Voetbal International club watcher Tim van Duijn disputed Romano's claim, stating that the Spanish publication's financial breakdown aligns with the reality of the negotiations.

Van Duijn noted that Barcelona will continue to pay a significant portion of the salary, as was the case during Ter Stegen's previous loan at Girona.

Sky Sport Germany confirmed that the loan agreement contains no option for a permanent transfer. Ter Stegen's contract with Barcelona runs until mid-2028.

The 44-time German international previously spent a loan spell at Girona, where injury limited him to just two official appearances.

The presence of Ajax manager Michel, who previously worked with Ter Stegen at Girona, was a key factor in the goalkeeper's decision to join the Eredivisie side.

If the medical clearance proceeds without complications, Ter Stegen could join the squad ahead of Ajax's competitive season opener on July 21, where they will face either Ferencvaros or FK Vojvodina.
