BMW has confirmed that its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine will remain in production well into the 2030s.

The announcement was made in an official release on July 3, 2026.

The new V8 variant will debut in the fifth-generation X5 SUV in 2027. According to Motor1.

com, the engine will power an M Performance model expected to be called the X5 M60.

This model will drop the traditional "i" suffix from its name. The letter will now be reserved exclusively for fully electric vehicles.

Powertrain Strategy and Lineup

Unlike the plug-in hybrid X5 M60e available in some markets, the US-bound V8 version will focus on a traditional combustion experience.

It will likely be assisted only by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

The fifth-generation X5 will be the first BMW model to support five distinct powertrain types. These include gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and hydrogen options.

The SUV will initially launch with inline-six engines. The high-performance V8 option is scheduled for 2027.

Beyond the X5, BMW plans to extend the V8 engine's lifespan across several luxury segments. A redesigned X7 debuting in 2027 will feature the eight-cylinder engine.

A refreshed 7 Series sedan will also receive a V8 M Performance variant in 2027.

Additionally, BMW's Alpina division is developing V8-powered versions of the 7 Series and next-generation X7.

Meanwhile, BMW continues to manufacture its twin-turbo 6.75-liter V12 engine at its Hams Hall facility in the UK.
