Tottenham Hotspur is finalizing a club-record £100 million deal to acquire midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.

The player is undergoing a medical examination at Hotspur Way as part of an aggressive summer recruitment drive.

The London club has moved quickly to secure Tonali as their sixth summer signing under manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Previous arrivals include Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka.

The swift business marks a significant shift from previous windows when Tottenham frequently rushed transactions closer to the transfer deadline.

Financial Pressures at Newcastle

The departure of Tonali reflects ongoing financial pressures at Newcastle United.

The club has needed to trade key assets to reinvest in the squad, following the previous exits of Alexander Isak and Antony Gordon within the past year.

Former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini shared his assessment of the transfer with BBC Radio Newcastle.

"Newcastle have had an issue for a number of years with the financial situation and selling players for that value, and replacing them with younger players, will make a huge change to their squad cost ratio," Gabbiadini said.

The pundit noted that while the deal represents a practical step for the club's financial health, the ultimate success of the move depends entirely on the recruitment strategy during the remainder of the current transfer window.

"It's probably a positive thing in many respects but it all hinges on what they do in this window, who they get in, and how they react to this move," Gabbiadini said.
