Argentina, Colombia, and Egypt secured the final three spots in the World Cup Round of 16 following narrow victories on Friday night and overnight.

Argentina Edges Cape Verde in Extra Time

Defending champion Argentina narrowly defeated Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time.

Lionel Messi scored one goal, bringing his tournament total to seven and his career World Cup tally to 20.

Cape Verde's goals came from Rotterdam-born players Deroy Duarte and Sidny Lopes Cabral.

The Cape Verdean community in Rotterdam filled three theaters with over 1,000 fans at the Pathé cinema.

Despite a population of just over 500,000, Cape Verde drew against Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay in the group stage.

Head coach Bubista expressed pride in his team's performance.

Former world champion Thierry Henry praised Cape Verde's inspiring run, calling it "magical."

Colombia Beats Ghana

Colombia defeated Ghana 1-0 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

Jhon Arias scored the lone goal in the 14th minute, while a Luis Díaz goal was disallowed for offside.

Colombia becomes the fourth South American team in the Round of 16. They will face Switzerland on Tuesday, aiming to match their best-ever quarterfinal appearance from 2014.

Egypt Advances on Penalties

Egypt secured its first-ever World Cup knockout victory by defeating Australia on penalties.

The match ended 1-1 after regulation, with Emam Ashour scoring for Egypt and a Mohamed Hany own goal leveling the score.

Egypt won the shootout 4-2 after misses by Australia's Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington. Head coach Hossam Hassan dedicated the historic win to the Palestinian people.

Egypt will now face Argentina in the Round of 16.

Upcoming Round of 16 Matches

Canada and Morocco will open the Round of 16 on Saturday evening at 19:00.

Dutch officials Danny Makkelie and Dennis Higler will serve as fourth official and assistant VAR.
