West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has completed an £85 million transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, rejecting a move to Manchester United after extensive talks.
The Portuguese international opted for the north London club due to a superior financial package, while Manchester United refused to match the upfront fee.

The decision is notable as Manchester United secured Champions League qualification last season, while Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League.
Echoes of Gascoigne's Regret
The transfer mirrors Paul Gascoigne's 1988 decision to snub Manchester United for Tottenham, driven by financial incentives offered by then-chairman Irving Scholar.
Gascoigne, now 59, has called that choice his biggest footballing regret, as Manchester United went on to dominate English football.
Recalling the events, Gascoigne said Sir Alex Ferguson had agreed to sign him, but Scholar offered his father £120,000, a BMW, and a sunbed for his sister, sealing the deal.

“I passed Old Trafford on the way to Spurs, and I was worried,” Gascoigne said. “But the deal was done on the sunbed.”
Despite winning the FA Cup with Tottenham in 1991, Gascoigne expressed remorse.
“Sometimes I look back and think what would have been… would I have won all those trophies,” he said in 2015.
