The Vierdaagse World Team has seen remarkable growth this year, expanding from just nine walkers eight years ago to more than 55 participants representing 19 nationalities.

However, the surge in popularity has led to ticket shortages, forcing organizers to turn away interested walkers for the upcoming Nijmeegse Vierdaagse event.

Founder Mo Hersi described the situation as "een uit de hand gelopen situatie" — a situation that got out of hand.

"Het wordt elk jaar meer en meer," Hersi said, noting that the initiative now requires a selection process due to limited capacity.

"We moesten ook gewoon nee verkopen dit jaar, omdat onze tickets op waren," he added.

The group is currently raising funds for the Foundation for Refugee Students UAF, securing a near-record amount of donations even before the multi-day walking event has officially started.

"We hebben dit jaar al bijna een recordbedrag opgehaald, terwijl de Vierdaagse nog moet beginnen," Hersi said.

Reflecting on the early days, Hersi recalled having to plead with people to join. "Toen moest ik mensen echt smeken om mee te doen aan de Vierdaagse.

Ze vroegen ook hoelang het zou duren. Nou, vier dagen..."

Amid recent anti-asylum seeker center protests, the diverse team aims to promote unity and foster relationships directly within the local community.

"Vooral nu, met alle prikkelingen die er in de maatschappij zijn, is het belangrijk om eenheid te tonen," Hersi said.
