South Australia Police has introduced six new 'shadow patrol cars' designed to blend in during daylight but reveal their police identity after dark.
The fleet includes two Subaru Outbacks, two Toyota Klugers (known as the Highlander in the US), and two Land Cruiser 300 Series, all fitted with color-matched vinyl graphics that remain hidden under bright sun.

At night, however, the reflective livery illuminates when hit by light, exposing the vehicle as a police cruiser.
The cars also ditch traditional roof light bars for smaller strobes tucked inside the grille and behind glass.

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens acknowledged the concept was lifted from US 'ghost cars' and 'stealth interceptors,' which have proven effective in disrupting evasive maneuvers and deterring repeat speeders.

The vehicles are equipped with speed detection systems, mobile alcohol and drug testing kits, and collision investigation gear.
Deployed immediately, the six cars will patrol regional highways and busy metropolitan zones.

Authorities hope they will combat drink driving, drug-impaired driving, and aggressive behavior—factors linked to 10%, 21%, and 36% of the state's 61 road fatalities this year, respectively.
