A friend claimed Wells stayed behind with a young woman, but the woman reportedly said he intended to return with his original group.
“We always taught him that if you go with a group, you stay with a group. If you go with five, you come back with five.
Do not separate from the group,” said Elmore Wonsley, Wells’s father.
The family expressed concern over Wells’s phone, which his mother tracked to an associate’s home.
Upon retrieval, digital logs and messages from the day of the disappearance had been erased.
“When we opened it up, there was nothing. There were no saved pictures, there were no snaps from that day,” said Christine Wonsley.
The investigation will involve mutual forensic analysis of the phone by local authorities and independent experts.
An independent autopsy has been funded externally, and the official state autopsy results remain unreleased.
“We just want to know what happened and why our baby didn’t come home,” said Christine Wonsley.

The Congressional Black Caucus has called for a transparent and timely investigation. Funeral services for Wells are scheduled for Monday at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs.
