He is classified as a civil servant rather than a personal pet, ensuring his role remains unchanged regardless of political leadership changes.
Burnham becomes the seventh prime minister to share the residence with Larry.
The cat has served under David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, and Sir Keir Starmer.

Larry's Official Role and Care
Larry was adopted from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home on February 15, 2011. He was a stray from London before finding his home at Downing Street.
His official duties include welcoming guests, inspecting security arrangements, and testing antique furniture for sleeping suitability.
Downing Street permanent staff manage his daily care and veterinary expenses without using taxpayer funds.
Burnham will relocate to the official residence with his wife, Marie-France van Heel, and their rescue dog, Axel.
