United States men's national team midfielder Sebastian Berhalter is finalizing a transfer from MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps to English Championship club Middlesbrough for a fee in the region of $2 million, according to reports from The Athletic.
The 25-year-old midfielder enters the final months of his contract with Vancouver at the end of the 2026 MLS season.

Rather than risking a free-transfer departure later this year, the Canadian club elected to recoup a transfer fee this summer as up to 10 European clubs monitored the player.
Berhalter makes the move across the Atlantic following an impressive individual stretch in Major League Soccer and international duty.
Over the past two seasons, the midfielder recorded 24 goal involvements for the Whitecaps, including eight goals and 13 assists during their run to the MLS Cup final last year.
In 18 appearances this season, he has recorded seven goals and four assists to help Vancouver reach the top of the Western Conference standings.

On the international stage, Berhalter featured in all five matches for the United States during the 2026 FIFA World Cup under manager Mauricio Pochettino.
In his sole start of the tournament against Turkey, he scored one goal and provided one assist before the USMNT suffered an exit in the Round of 16.
At Middlesbrough, Berhalter will reunite with fellow American midfielder Aidan Morris at the Riverside Stadium.
Middlesbrough, which finished fifth in the Championship last season before losing 1–0 to Hull City in the playoff final, seeks promotion to the Premier League in the upcoming campaign.

The move places Berhalter alongside several other American players currently competing in England's second tier, including Haji Wright, Patrick Agyemang, Damion Downs, George Campbell, and Morris.
