Dutch Eredivisie club Willem II has secured the services of Belgian defender Mats Lemmens on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old signed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year on July 23, 2026.

Lemmens' Career Path

Lemmens joins the Tilburg-based side after his recent stint with RWDM Brussels in the Belgian second division. He began his career in the youth academy of KRC Genk.

In 2020, he moved to Italian side US Lecce. During his time in Italy, he had a loan spell at Calcio Lecco.

He later returned to Belgium to play for KSC Lokeren-Temse before signing a permanent deal with RWDM Brussels.

Player and Club Statements

Lemmens expressed enthusiasm about his move to Willem II. "From the first conversations I had a good feeling about Willem II," he said.

"The club's ambition appealed to me immediately."

He added, "I look forward to getting to know the supporters and my teammates and want to do everything I can to contribute to a successful season."

Technical Director Freek Heerkens praised the signing.

"With Mats we are bringing in a defender who, despite his age, has already gained the necessary experience in various competitions," Heerkens said.

He noted that Lemmens brings physical strength, composure on the ball, and a professional attitude.

"We see in Mats someone who, with his qualities, can make a positive contribution to the team."

Lemmens now begins a new chapter wearing the red, white, and blue jersey of Willem II in Tilburg.
