Municipal officials in Edmonton have extended an extreme heat response through July 26, while lifting a poor air quality warning on July 23 as weather conditions shifted and wildfire smoke began to disperse across Western Canada.

The air quality response was canceled at 9 a. m.

on Thursday after being active since July 20 due to high-risk smoke levels.

However, forecasted daytime temperatures near 30°C prompted officials to prolong heat measures until Sunday morning.

Cooling Measures and Assistance

To assist vulnerable residents during the heat, Edmonton activated 29 hydrant-mounted water stations and opened public facilities like libraries, pools, and recreation centers as cooling hubs.

Municipal peace officers are also distributing bottled water, while N95 masks remain available at civic sites.

Meteorological shifts played a key role in clearing the air across northern Alberta, as changing upper-level wind patterns cut off the flow of smoke from Northwest Territories wildfires into the region.

Environment Canada meteorologist Janelle Gergely explained that an incoming upper ridge is driving the shift toward hot, dry weather.

"What that means is we get sinking air, which prevents cloud development, which means we won't have storms, which we've had a lot of in Edmonton," said Gergely.

"It just means sunny conditions and it allows heat to build."

Regarding the clearance of wildfire haze from the metropolitan area, Gergely noted that changing wind directions ended the influx of northern smoke.

"The upper level winds were in a northerly flow, so it was affecting that smoke southward," said Gergely.
