Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the screenplay comes from Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, and Justin Kuritzkes.

The story takes place four years after Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Parker fighting crime full-time in a world that no longer remembers his identity.

Thematic Significance of Punisher and Hulk

Cretton explained how both characters reflect the film's core themes.

"Both the Punisher and Bruce Banner and the Hulk reflect the theme of this movie and the journey that Peter Parker is on," he told Nerdtropolis.

Castle represents a dangerous path for Parker.

"Peter Parker sees the Punisher as a potential warning sign of where he could go if he allowed himself to continue down the path that he's on," Cretton said.

Banner offers a different perspective, despite an intense action sequence.

"You'll also be surprised at the intimacy of it and the reflection that the Hulk has for the journey that Peter is on," Cretton added.

Bernthal on Bringing Punisher to a PG-13 World

Jon Bernthal reflected on adapting his TV-MA vigilante character into a PG-13 feature film.

"We're dealing with a dark version of Spider-Man, where he's closing himself off and trying to figure out who he is," he told Den of Geek.
