Microsoft is testing a new smart download client designed to accelerate game download and update speeds on Xbox consoles.
The feature was detailed in the Xbox Update Preview for July 22, 2026, and is currently available to members of the Xbox Insiders Program.

How the Smart Download Client Works
The system actively searches for and evaluates available content server pools shortly after an installation begins.
According to Microsoft, the client automatically measures connection speeds across different pools and routes the download through the fastest available server.
"Users will experience a new feature to optimize game install and update speeds by introducing a smart download client.
Shortly after your game download begins, the client will check which content servers are available for the install or update.
It will then test the connection speed to each server pool and select the fastest available connection for that install," Microsoft stated in the release notes for OS version XB_FLT_2608GE\26100.9405.260719-2200.

The speed test will rerun periodically during the install or update to ensure that the client continues using the fastest available connection.
Along with the speed optimization, the July 22 build addresses a technical glitch where certain game and application updates failed to complete their installation process.
Microsoft is also rolling out additional interface enhancements in subsequent insider builds. The July 24 release introduced visual indicators to help users track subscription-based media.
"Users should now see badges for games to indicate if the title is granted via a subscription in the Manage Installation page for the base game and add-ons," Microsoft noted regarding the update.

Both performance enhancements and interface changes are expected to arrive in an upcoming public firmware rollout, though an official public release date has not been confirmed.
