Romijn, who last played Mystique in 2011's X-Men: First Class, explained that modern production techniques significantly streamlined her physical preparation for the role compared to earlier films.
"Apparently, they were no longer interested in waiting for actors to be processed, so it was much faster," Romijn said.
She noted that despite the shorter preparation time now, the former multi-hour application routine served a specific artistic purpose during her initial run with the franchise.
"The original transformation that I went through for those first three X-Men movies was really imperative to that character for me: It really put me in just the right headspace to play a character as angry as Mystique," she said.
