"The different rock layers are a record of variable-sized impacts occurring at different distances from where this rock sequence was accumulating," said Alex Jones at Imperial College London.

Jones added that debris from both distant large collisions and nearby small impacts built the thick rock formation.

"During this violent era, it wasn't rain or snow falling from the sky, but an almost constant barrage of molten rock droplets and pulverized dust kicked up by asteroid impacts," said Jones.

"If we can pin down the ages of these layers, it would be like reading a cosmic weather report from 4 billion years ago."

Perseverance collected two core samples named Bell Island and Main River, which could allow scientists to accurately date the impact timeline if returned to Earth.

Meanwhile, in Gale Crater, the Curiosity rover inspected severe wear and tear on its aluminum wheels after traveling over 20 miles across rocky terrain during its nearly 14-year mission.

Engineers at NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory confirmed that despite visible holes and cracks from the harsh surface, Curiosity's wheels continue to perform reliably.
