Global crude oil prices fell to their lowest level in more than a week on July 28, 2026, as diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran eased fears of immediate energy supply disruptions in the Middle East.

Market strategists noted that the sharp downturn in crude futures directly influenced foreign exchange movements in North America, pressing currency pairs against established support levels.

"Prices bounced off of support (in USD-CAD) at 1.4025 last week as well, which is also enticing some USD buyers," said George Davis, chief technical strategist at RBC Capital Markets.

Despite the recent drop in crude, market analysts highlight an unprecedented statistical decoupling between the Canadian dollar and benchmark oil prices over recent years.

Historical data indicates commodity-linked currencies like the loonie, Australian Dollar, and Brazilian Real are trading two to three standard deviations below expected valuations based on interest rate differentials and risk sentiment.

Meanwhile, shipping traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb strait rose to 28 vessels on Monday, marking a four-day high.

However, supply risks remain elevated due to recent drone activity targeting Saudi Arabian petroleum infrastructure, alongside anticipated U.
