Ugandan super-heavyweight boxer Aziz Abdul was disqualified from his quarterfinal bout at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Scotland.
The fight ended after he delivered an illegal headbutt in the final round.
Abdul faced England's Damar Thomas in the super-heavyweight division. The match took place at a venue with historical significance for Abdul's family.
In the opening round, Abdul landed three sweeping left hooks. However, Thomas countered effectively with a short, stabbing left punch.
The second round saw Abdul swing wildly and receive a point deduction. He punched Thomas in the face after a clinch break.
Trailing on the judges' scorecards, Abdul resorted to a headbutt in the final round. The referee immediately stopped the fight.
Spectators jeered and booed Abdul as he left the ring. The boxer later expressed strong disapproval of the officiating.
"This referee's decision is not right and I am not happy. Of course it's unfair.
When you watch the previous fights of England, their boxers create a lot of fouls," Abdul said.
Abdul is the grandson of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. Amin ruled Uganda during the 1970s and died in Saudi Arabia in 2003.
In 1976, he famously declared himself the 'King of Scotland' to express solidarity with the nation.
