A head-on collision between a truck and a passenger van on the N48 near Balkbrug, Overijssel, claimed one life and left six others seriously injured on Thursday, July 30, 2026.
The accident occurred around 11:25 AM, prompting an immediate escalation to a GRIP 1 and Major Assistance operation.
Multiple fire departments from the IJsselland region, along with a team from Zuidwolde, responded to the scene. Several ambulances and a trauma helicopter were also dispatched.
The passenger van was carrying seven occupants at the time of the crash. Several people were trapped inside the vehicle.
Authorities confirmed that one passenger died at the scene. The remaining six occupants were transported to nearby hospitals with serious injuries.
The truck driver escaped the collision without injuries, according to local police.
Investigation and Road Closure
Law enforcement has launched a formal investigation into the cause of the crash. The identities of the deceased and injured victims have not yet been released.
Rijkswaterstaat closed the N48 in both directions between Zuidwolde and Dedemsvaart to allow emergency services to provide aid and forensic investigators to conduct a thorough scene examination.
Traffic heading toward Ommen is being rerouted via the U55 route along the A37. Vehicles traveling toward Hoogeveen are diverted via the U54 route along the N377.
