Ghana and Cape Verde kicked off their 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Group D campaigns in a historic match at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca.
The match marks Ghana's 12th appearance in the tournament.

Only Nigeria, South Africa, and Cameroon have featured more times in the competition's history than the Black Queens.
Ghana enters the tournament with a strong record in opening matches, having secured seven wins, two draws, and just two defeats across its previous 11 appearances.
Head coach Kim Björkegren's side finished third in the last edition after defeating South Africa in the bronze-medal match, following three previous runner-up finishes.

Cape Verde made its historic debut as only the second island nation to ever compete in WAFCON history, following Réunion's appearance in 2000.
The Cape Verdean national team earned its maiden qualification by defeating Guinea and Mali during the qualifying rounds.

After suffering a 1-0 defeat at home against Mali in the first leg of the final qualifying round, Cape Verde staged a dramatic comeback with a 4-2 victory away, securing advancement with a 4-3 aggregate score.
