This transition follows the Full Moon that occurred on July 29, leaving the lunar surface still largely illuminated and visible to observers.

During this phase, the Moon offers clear visual targets for skywatchers using various levels of equipment.
With the naked eye, observers can identify major surface structures such as Mare Tranquillitatis, Copernicus Crater, and Tycho Crater.
Binoculars reveal additional details, including Gassendi Crater, Mare Frigoris, Clavius Crater, Mare Nectaris, Alphonsus Crater, and the Alps Mountains.
For those with telescopes, higher-resolution features become visible, such as the Caucasus Mountains, the Descartes Highlands, and the historical landing sites of Apollo 15 and Apollo 17.
Earlier in its orbit, on July 23, the Moon was in its Waxing Gibbous phase with 58% surface visibility.

During that time, notable targets included Mare Crisium and Mare Fecunditatis.
According to NASA, the Moon completes a full cycle of eight distinct phases approximately every 29.5 days as it orbits Earth.
The illuminated portion visible from Earth constantly shifts as sunlight strikes different areas of the lunar surface.
The eight recognized phases in sequence are New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, and Waning Crescent.
