Italy has threatened to suspend Schengen border cooperation with Spain following a surge of migrant arrivals in the Spanish territory of Ceuta.
The diplomatic pushback from Rome comes after thousands of individuals entered the North African enclave.

Local estimates indicate between 1,500 and 2,000 migrants crossed into the city, overwhelming local infrastructure.
Madrid has deployed military forces to secure the area.
The dispute escalated into public disputes between ministers from both countries, leading Spanish officials to summon the Italian ambassador.
Political Reactions
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani criticized Spanish border management during an address on the regional escalation.
"This policy itself constitutes a pull factor," said Tajani.
Spanish lawmakers pointed to external political factors behind the border crossings.
"Morocco provoked this crisis to distract attention from its own internal troubles," said Tesh Sidi, Spanish lawmaker.
European Union officials have stepped in to assist with border management.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has scheduled on-site visits to assess the enclave's conditions.
European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner offered military and border support to aid local authorities.
"Frontex is ready to support Spain to get the situation under control," said Brunner.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian emergency personnel have mobilized to assist Western partners facing natural disasters.
"Ukraine is always ready to help those who have supported us throughout these years of struggle against Russian aggression," said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Irish officials maintain a heavy presence in communication roles across Brussels.
"We have been sending speechwriters across Europe since the Middle Ages," said Thomas Byrne, Irish Minister for European Affairs.
Executive authorities in Brussels are evaluating future economic measures against Russia as current sanctions strategies undergo policy review.

"What we can guarantee is that we will continue to exert maximum pressure on the Russian war machine, as we have done so far," said an unnamed European Commission spokesperson.
