A 63-Day Struggle
The uprising was launched at 5:00 p. m.
by units of the Home Army under the codename 'Hour W' (Godzina W).
Initially expected to last only a few days until Soviet forces arrived, Polish insurgents fought German occupation troops for 63 days before surrendering on October 2, 1944.
Tens of thousands of insurgents and civilians lost their lives during the conflict.

Following the capitulation, German forces systematically destroyed a large portion of the capital.
Officially established as a national remembrance day in 2009, the anniversary is marked nationwide with wreath-laying ceremonies, religious services, exhibitions, and historical reenactments.
