The Senior Citizens League, a nonpartisan advocacy group, projects a 3.8% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for Social Security benefits in 2027.

This would be the highest annual increase since the 8.7% boost in 2022.

In recent years, COLA changes have been more moderate: 3.2% in 2023, 2.5% in 2024, and 2.8% in 2025.

As of June, the average monthly Social Security benefit was $2,084. A 3.8% increase would add approximately $79, raising it to about $2,163.

For those receiving the maximum benefit of $5,181 per month, the increase would be $197, bringing their total to $5,378.

How COLA is Calculated

The annual COLA is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) during the third quarter—July through September.

The Labor Department will release September's figures on October 14 at 8:30 a. m.

ET. Following this, the Social Security Administration will announce the official 2027 COLA increase.
