The UK's approach is not unique. Much of Europe, along with Australia, Japan, and China, has similar licensing restrictions.
In North America, however, a standard license allows driving either transmission, regardless of which type was used in the test.
This means someone could pass in an automatic and legally drive a manual the next day, even without prior experience.
The question remains: Is the UK's system overly bureaucratic, or is North America too lenient?
A short conversion course could be a sensible middle ground, acknowledging that manual driving is a skill worth teaching while recognizing that safe drivers shouldn't need to repeat a full test.
Would a one-hour lesson be enough, or should manual drivers still face a full second test?
