Subaru's Outback has evolved from a lifted wagon into a full-fledged midsize SUV.

To see if this shift works, we spent a week with both the naturally aspirated Limited and the turbocharged Wilderness trims.

The result surprised us.

Design: From Wagon to SUV

The new Outback is noticeably larger than its predecessors. Calling it a wagon is more nostalgic than accurate.

It now sits firmly in the midsize SUV segment, with a slightly longer roofline than rivals.

The Limited trim looks clean and mature, with an understated elegance. It appears expensive without trying too hard.

The Wilderness, on the other hand, goes all-in on off-road styling.

Thick plastic cladding, copper accents, and aggressive bumpers make the Wilderness look busy.

While the extra ride height is practical, the visual drama may be too much for some. Subaru's design direction is clear, and buyers seem to approve.

Interior Quality and Space

Inside, the Outback impresses with high-quality materials and solid switchgear. The Limited, priced around $43,000, offers excellent value.

The Wilderness, at $50,535, sits near the average new car transaction price.

Space is a standout feature. At 6'6", I fit comfortably in both rows.

Cargo space easily swallowed two full-size bicycles. The new 12.1-inch infotainment system is responsive and modern, though the large bezel looks dated.

The digital instrument cluster and available Nappa leather add a premium feel. Physical volume knob placement remains an ergonomic quibble.

Both trims share the same comfortable cabin, but the Limited's lower price makes it the smarter choice for most buyers.
