It's massive, capable, and unapologetic about its size.

Measuring 232.8 inches long and over 81 inches wide, it dwarfs most vehicles on the road.
Its 33-inch mud-terrain tires and red recovery hooks signal serious off-road intent.
Power and Capability
Under the hood sits a 6.2-liter V8 producing 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with a 10-speed automatic and a two-speed transfer case.
Front and rear lockers, skid plates, and Multimatic DSSV dampers make it a trail weapon. It can tow up to 8,700 pounds when properly equipped.
On-Road Compromises
But this capability comes at a cost.
My test truck averaged just 11.9 mpg over 210 miles, far below the EPA's 15 mpg combined estimate.
Its sheer size makes it feel like piloting a boat through town. Parking and tight maneuvers require constant attention.

The cabin is a highlight, with a large, responsive infotainment screen and physical controls for climate and truck functions.
Storage is abundant, including a clever hidden upper glove box.
Rear-seat passengers enjoy generous legroom and heated outboard seats. However, some plastics feel cheap for the $76,290 as-tested price.
The column shifter looks like it belongs on a boat, and the steering wheel buttons don't feel premium.
Still, the cabin is durable and practical.
The Silverado ZR2 is a serious off-road machine, but it's not for everyone. Its thirst for fuel and massive footprint are significant trade-offs.
If you need a truck that can conquer trails and don't mind frequent gas station visits, the ZR2 delivers.

Otherwise, a more moderate pickup might be a better fit.
