Four-time world champion Max Verstappen confirmed during media day in Canada that he will remain active in Formula One for the 2027 season, contingent on the sport meeting driver expectations regarding planned engine regulation changes.
The announcement addresses widespread speculation about a potential early departure, though Verstappen expressed strong dissatisfaction with his current RB22 vehicle's performance following bouncing issues during the Sprint race and qualifying sessions.
Verstappen established a firm stance when questioned about his future. "Ja, zeker weten," he said, indicating that only extraordinary circumstances would alter his career trajectory.
He further noted the importance of mutual compliance with established agreements.
Verstappen previously voiced approval for the upcoming 2027 power unit modifications, noting they enhance the sport's appeal. "Dat maakt het product beter."
Despite confirming his long-term presence, the championship leader remained uncommitted regarding his specific team affiliation for 2027, though he expressed a general desire for structural longevity with Red Bull.
He minimized the urgency of contract negotiations, emphasizing that his future arrangements must accommodate external motorsport commitments, including endurance racing.
Verstappen noted that discussions with Red Bull management actively encompass these secondary racing ventures.
The driver maintained a composed outlook regarding ongoing contractual developments.
He expressed readiness to accept alternative outcomes if a contract extension cannot be finalized.
Parallel to contract discussions, former F1 team manager Peter Windsor analyzed Verstappen's recent practice performance on his YouTube channel, noting significant single-lap pace despite the driver complaining that his feet were slipping off the pedals.
He highlighted that Verstappen managed a high-fuel, 13-lap long run on a dirty track, securing data that placed him well ahead of the field initially, before finishing seventh in sprint qualification behind pole-sitter George Russell.
The analyst also pointed out that the session extension due to red flags allowed Red Bull to evaluate race setups more thoroughly than competitors like Mercedes.
Windsor observed a reduction in one-lap practice runs for Verstappen compared to rival teams, while praising teammate Isaac Hadjar for qualifying closely behind him.
However, Windsor urged caution regarding immediate expectations, citing sluggish practice starts from the Red Bull vehicles compared to Ferrari.
The qualifying session concluded with a structured team distribution, featuring Mercedes locking out the front row ahead of McLaren and Ferrari.
The next scheduled event is the competitive race session at the Montreal circuit.
