A new television adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic frontier novel series, "Little House on the Prairie," will premiere on Netflix on July 9, 2026.
The joint production between Netflix and CBS Studios aims to focus heavily on the original books rather than serving as a direct remake of the famous 1970s NBC series.
Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine and executive producer Joy Gorman Wettels developed the project to explore perspectives and historical realities that went unaddressed in earlier versions.
"A lot of people consider them children's literature, but I really do think they're really about sort of how America became America," Sonnenshine said.
She noted that the story delves into national mythology, adding, "It's all about myth-making. Our culture is really wrapped up in the stories we tell about ourselves."
Cast members emphasized that music remains a vital element for the survival of the frontier family.
"It's, like, one of the only things they have," stated Crosby Fitzgerald, who plays Caroline Ingalls.
Skywalker Hughes, portraying Mary Ingalls, added, "Other than each other!" while Alice Halsey, who plays Laura Ingalls, noted, "They couldn't really do a lot on the prairie."
Fitzgerald explained the cultural significance of the family's musical elements, saying, "These songs have been passed down. It reminds them of the home they left."
Hughes further remarked that "Music gives them hope," while Luke Bracey, playing Charles Ingalls, concluded, "It's one thing that can't be taken away from them."
The new production features a multi-racial cast and utilized an Osage cultural consultant to address historical portrayals of Indigenous and Black characters.
The adaptation introduces characters such as Dr. Tann, a Black doctor from the novels, and explores the background of the neighbor Mr. Edwards as a traumatized Civil War veteran.
"I knew that there would be controversy around how this is done," executive producer Joy Gorman Wettels stated, referencing modern cultural debates surrounding the books.
"I just think that it doesn't help us to look back and erase the literature, or erase the mistakes.
It helps us to look at them through a new lens in a way that welcomes new readers and welcomes new viewers," she said.
Actor Warren Christie, who portrays John Edwards, expressed immense pride in the scope of the project.
"You see the name, 'Little House on the Prairie,' and it obviously carries a certain history to it, a certain cachet," Christie told Fox News Digital, adding that the script highlights community and multi-generational viewing.
