Taylor Sheridan's crime drama Mayor of Kingstown made an immediate mark after arriving on Netflix in the United States.

All four seasons were added on October 5, 2026, and the series climbed to No. 6 on Netflix's Top 10 in its opening week, according to CBR.

The show recorded 2.7 million views and 23.2 million hours viewed during that stretch.

That showing put it ahead of recent Netflix originals such as The Gentlemen season two and A Different World season one.

The debut also signals a notable shift in Netflix's ties to Sheridan's television output.

While titles like Yellowstone, 1883, and 1923 have already streamed on Netflix in international markets, Mayor of Kingstown is the first Sheridan-created series to reach Netflix in the US.

Licensing Deal and Growing Role of Acquired Shows

Netflix's agreement with Paramount Global was first reported in January 2026 and covered 20 shows.

The package included SEAL Team, Watson, Matlock, and The King of Queens, with most of the announced licensing arrangements designated for international territories.

Mayor of Kingstown centers on the effort to hold together a fragile balance of power in a fictional American city built around the prison industry.

Jeremy Renner leads the drama, which debuted on Paramount+ in 2021 before its move to Netflix.

The series' early numbers arrive as licensed programs carry more weight in Netflix's subscriber strategy.

TheWrap reported in July 2026 that licensed content accounted for 53% of new subscriber sign-ups in the first quarter of 2026, even though it made up just 40% of Netflix's global content library.

Established shows such as Friends, Seinfeld, Breaking Bad, and Mad Men have shown the draw of series with multiple seasons ready for extended viewing.

Unlike originals that ask audiences to wait between seasons, completed shows give subscribers more episodes to watch right away.

Netflix's larger US audience also offers a chance to introduce Sheridan's work to viewers who have not seen it.

As of January 2026, Netflix counted 87 million US subscribers, compared with 35.8 million for Paramount+, according to figures cited by CBR.

That gap leaves a sizable potential audience for Sheridan's productions outside Paramount+.

His other series include Landman, Tulsa King, Lioness, and The Madison, while Yellowstone and its Western prequels have already reached Netflix viewers in the United Kingdom.

Sheridan's longer-term plans add another layer to the streaming competition.

He has signed a deal with NBCUniversal set to take effect at the beginning of 2029, leaving Paramount+ a limited window to expand its existing catalog of his productions.

Paramount+'s Head of Originals, Jane Wiseman, has said the company intends to keep developing Sheridan-related programming before his departure.

Speaking to Deadline, she said, "That is the hope, and that is the intention."

Wiseman also described talks about additional programming that could reach the service before the agreement changes.

She said, "There are a couple [of] things that we've been discussing that we would love to get on the service before 2029.

But we know that his legacy will remain with us for many, many years to come."

Although Sheridan's NBCUniversal agreement does not begin until 2029, future licensing arrangements will depend on the rights available and the timing of later deals.

Mayor of Kingstown's early Netflix performance offers a concrete example of how an established Paramount production can reach a broader audience through a competing platform.
