The prosecution in Utah has moved forward with its case against Tyler James Robinson, the man accused of the fatal shooting of political commentator Charlie Kirk.
The Utah County Attorney’s office presented significant evidence during a week-long preliminary hearing, aiming to demonstrate sufficient basis for the trial to proceed before a state district judge.
The hearing marks a critical phase in the legal proceedings regarding the incident that occurred in September 2025.
Robinson, 23, faces charges of aggravated murder in connection with the death of Kirk, who was shot in the neck while delivering a speech at Utah Valley University.
Prosecutors are actively pursuing the death penalty, noting that DNA evidence purportedly links the suspect to the weapon used in the shooting.
The state also alleges that Robinson left a note confessing to the act, discovered by his roommate and romantic partner.
To date, the defendant has not yet entered a formal plea.
The ongoing hearings represent the first time the victim's widow, Erika Kirk, and his family have been present in the courtroom alongside the accused.
Christopher Bagley, a former police officer at the university, provided harrowing testimony regarding the chaos after a gunshot was heard during the event.
"Everybody kind of got up.
A lot of people were screaming and starting to run in all different directions," Bagley told the court on the first day of the hearing.
After failing to locate additional victims, Bagley secured the scene and inspected a nearby rooftop, where he discovered indentations in the gravel that led him to suspect a sniper had been positioned there.
David Hull, a former agent with the Utah State Bureau of Investigation, testified regarding video footage captured on the day of the shooting.
The evidence, presented by the prosecution, reportedly shows Robinson arriving on campus, departing, and later returning in different clothing.
Hull detailed footage depicting a person—identified by authorities as Robinson—entering a rooftop area, running, and crouching in a prone position until a shot was fired at 12:23.
The person was then observed descending from the roof and exiting the campus.
Additionally, evidence indicated that Robinson’s vehicle was on campus on the morning of September 11.
Police documentation noted an interaction between an officer and the driver, during which specific details and a partial license plate were recorded, eventually leading to the identification of the vehicle's owner.
While the prosecution and defense have engaged in disputes over the editing of certain videos intended for clarity, prosecutors are continuing to introduce testimony and digital evidence to support the charges against Robinson as the five-day hearing progresses.
