Canada will officially participate in the Eurovision Song Contest starting in 2027 in Bulgaria.

The announcement followed a vote at the 96th European Broadcasting Union (EBU) General Assembly in Prague.

National broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada became a full member of the organization after being an affiliate since 1950.

Eurovision officials confirmed that the country will be eligible to host the competition if it wins.

This privilege is notably withheld from Australia, which joined as an associate member in 2015.

The policy alignment reflects efforts by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to build alliances with Europe amid rising geopolitical tensions.

Canadian data shows interest in the European event is already strong.

The country ranked among the top three nations in the "Rest of the World" voting category during the recent edition in Vienna.

Prime Minister Mark Carney used his Canada Day address on July 1 to highlight the country's unique cultural position.

"La célébration de la musique la plus folle et la plus grandiose au monde s’apprête à devenir encore meilleure, encore plus endiablée, car le monde a besoin de plus de Canada," stated Carney.

The speech took place against a backdrop of domestic challenges, including upcoming elections in Quebec and an October 19 referendum in Alberta regarding its status within the federation.

Diplomatic and Cultural Significance

European analysts view the musical integration as part of a larger diplomatic pattern.

Canada and Europe seek reliable partnerships based on democratic values and strategic resource trade.
