London City Lionesses have announced the signing of two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas on a free transfer.
The 32-year-old Spain international joins the Women's Super League side after leaving Barcelona.
Putellas secured 38 trophies with Barcelona, scoring over 230 goals in more than 500 appearances. She is also a 2023 World Cup champion.
The midfielder reportedly chose London City to avoid playing directly against Barcelona in European competitions. She rejected offers from other European clubs and NWSL teams.
"I am thrilled to embark on this new chapter with London City Lionesses," said Putellas.
"The club's ambition and its steadfast commitment to growing as a women-only independent club resonate deeply with me."
Putellas has been attending men's World Cup matches as a spectator. She watched Spain defeat Austria in Los Angeles during the round of 32.
"What makes the World Cup so special is that it brings the entire football community together," said Putellas.
"The intensity, the atmosphere in the stadiums and the unexpected moments are always highlights for me."
She emphasized that dual international success for both Spanish national teams would inspire future generations. Spain qualified automatically for the 2027 Women's World Cup earlier this summer.
"It would be an incredible achievement for Spanish football," said Putellas. "Success at the international level shows young players that dreams can become reality."
The midfielder also noted the commercial and audience connections between major tournaments. She said a successful men's World Cup can build anticipation for the women's tournament.
"Every successful football tournament helps grow the game globally," said Putellas. "When fans become engaged with international football, that excitement often carries over to other competitions."
London City owner Michele Kang has aggressively targeted international talent. The club previously signed Mary Earps, Janni Thomsen, and Nicole Anyomi this summer.
"Alexia Putellas embodies the pinnacle of talent, dedication, and vision in women's football," said Kang.
"Her decision to join our independent, women-first club is a powerful endorsement of what we are building at London City."
Goalkeeper Mary Earps expressed enthusiasm about Putellas' arrival.
"It's really exciting to be playing alongside a lot of great players and Alexia's signing is massive for the club," said Earps.
London City Lionesses finished sixth in the WSL last season. The squad will begin pre-season training ahead of the upcoming campaign.
