Newcastle United has finalized the acquisition of teenage midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax for a total fee of £23 million, the club announced on Thursday, July 9, 2026.

The English club will pay an initial £20 million plus £3 million in performance-related bonuses to secure the 18-year-old Netherlands youth international on a five-year contract.

According to Sky Sports News, the transfer follows a disagreement between Ajax and Steur regarding his first-team playing time in Amsterdam next season, which led to the player being demoted to their Under-21 squad.

The central midfielder came through the RKAV Volendam and Ajax youth systems, earning the Abdelhak Nouri Trophy as Ajax's top academy talent before making 25 senior appearances and playing in the Champions League last season.

Steur becomes the third summer arrival for Newcastle under head coach Eddie Howe, following the signings of winger Bazoumana Toure and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, which helped offset the high-profile departures of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.

Player and Manager Reactions

"It's an incredible feeling to be here.

It's a giant club in the Premier League and it was always my dream to play in the best league in the world, so this is really exciting," Steur said.

The young player expressed gratitude for his developmental years in the Netherlands while acknowledging the significance of the Premier League opportunity.

"I was at home at Ajax - I joined when I was seven and I leave with only good memories, but when a club like Newcastle comes for you, it's really hard to say no.

The last few days have gone fast and I'm very happy to join," he added.

The Dutch teenager also described his tactical style and on-field attributes as he transitions to English football.

"I'm a player who likes to get on the ball and play forward all the time.

I'm happy playing between the lines and I feel I have a lot of energy in my game.

I just want to win," Steur said.

Newcastle leadership welcomed the new addition, emphasizing his developmental pathway and top-tier experience in the Eredivisie.

"We're delighted to welcome Sean to Newcastle United - he's a top young prospect who has already tasted Champions League and top-flight Dutch football," Howe said.

The manager outlined long-term expectations for the midfielder within the evolving first-team squad structure.

"We see real potential in Sean and believe he has the characteristics to become a valuable player for us for years to come.

That's something we're really excited by and look forward to working with him and helping him achieve his ambitions," Howe said.

Howe credited the Amsterdam club for providing the foundations for the player's early professional growth.

"Sean is an exciting addition to our squad.

He's had an excellent upbringing at Ajax, who have an outstanding track record of producing young players," he said.

Sky Sports News reported that Newcastle remains in advanced negotiations with Freiburg to potentially add Swiss international midfielder Johan Manzambi for a fee valued near £51 million.
