Authorities in Grand Haven Township, Michigan, have confirmed that a family of eight died in an apparent murder-suicide on July 24.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, shot and killed his wife, Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children before setting their home on fire and taking his own life.
Emergency crews responding to a house fire on Riverside Trail discovered the bodies of the eight family members along with several deceased pets.
Autopsy results showed that Amanda and the children died of homicide, while Kristopher died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The handgun used was legally registered to Kristopher Karolkiewicz, and investigators found no evidence that anyone else fired the weapon.
There were no prior police calls to the home, no signs of a struggle, and no suicide note left behind.
Victims and Background
The six children included four biological sons, aged 15, 12, 11, and 5, and two adopted 11-year-old daughters.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz had recently lost his job with the American Heart Association earlier in July, according to the organization.
Ottawa County Sheriff's Office Capt. Jacob Sparks said the case remains open as investigators seek a motive.
"This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand why it happened," Sparks said.
"But we'll do our best to find the answers and to honor the memory of those victims."
Amanda Karolkiewicz worked as a substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary and had recently authored a children's book titled "The Magical Mantra: A Tiny Book About Self-Talk."
Book illustrator Krystal Kramer said Amanda wrote the book based on her experiences as a mother.
"Raising her six children showed her something profoundly different—that we are born good," Kramer said.
Online posts from two years ago under the username "MandyK1179" detailed marital struggles and infidelity. Amanda expressed fear about leaving due to raising six children while navigating counseling.
Family members released statements grieving the loss.
Amanda's parents, Steve and Becky Lawwill, said, "We treasured every moment we had with her and her six children, and words cannot adequately express our devastation."
Her cousin, Emily Jones, highlighted Amanda's dedication to her children and a recent trip to China with her adopted daughters.
Grand Haven Area Public Schools is offering counseling support.
Superintendent Kristin Perkowski said, "Our hearts are with their family, friends, neighbors, and all who knew and loved them."
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office asks anyone with information to contact investigators.
