Global cryptocurrency markets experienced heightened volatility on July 29, 2026, as investors braced for the U. S.

Federal Reserve's benchmark interest rate decision while reacting to escalation in Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions.

Total market capitalization ticked up 1.2 percent to roughly 2 trillion euros.

Bitcoin rose 1.3 percent to approximately 56,400 euros, recovering slightly after dropping by several thousand dollars earlier in the week.

Ethereum slipped 1.5 percent to 1,670 euros, while XRP gained 2.8 percent to trade near 0.94 euros.

Market uncertainty was compounded when Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles at a suspected U. S.

base in Jordan. The U.

S. military intercepted all incoming projectiles, reporting no casualties or structural damage.

Oil prices surged following the attack, with U. S.

crude rising over 7 percent after aggressive public warnings from President Donald Trump.

Economic expectations surrounding the Federal Open Market Committee meeting remained unusually split.

CME Group's FedWatch tool indicated a 33.7 to 35.8 percent probability of a surprise 25-basis-point rate hike, a significant jump from 25.7 percent a week earlier.

Market maker Citadel Securities issued a research note forecasting an unexpected rate increase to the 3.75 to 4.00 percent range.

The institution argued that an immediate rate hike would decisively end the era of heavy forward guidance.

"An unexpected rate hike would emphatically end the era of forward guidance where every policy move is pre-announced and act as a cleansing moment, forcing markets to price what the data implies the central bank should do rather than what it is expected to do," said Frank Flight, head of macro strategy at Citadel Securities.

Flight noted that delaying action until the September meeting risks diluting the psychological impact on market behavior and wage negotiations.

"If a majority of the FOMC is likely to support a hike in September anyway, and if we are correct that Warsh has much to gain from a move in July, it seems unlikely that voting members would oppose the chairman to act six weeks earlier than they otherwise would," Flight added.

Conversely, major crypto exchanges anticipate policy rates to remain unchanged between 3.50 and 3.75 percent.

Analysts cited recent inflation readings coming in slightly lower than projected alongside a cooling labor market.

"The most likely outcome of the July FOMC meeting is no change in interest rates," said Thomas Perfumo, economist at cryptocurrency exchange Kraken.

A benchmark rate increase typically strengthens the U. S.

dollar while dampening demand for risk assets like equities and digital currencies.

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh has intentionally moved away from detailed forward guidance, leaving traders focused on potential shifts in official language regarding persistent inflation risks.

Beyond macroeconomic indicators, internal blockchain metrics reveal shifting conditions.

According to analysis by Alex Adler Jr., approximately 56 percent of all circulating Bitcoin is currently held at a profit relative to purchase price, up from 47 percent last month.

On the XRP network, data from XRPscan shows active wallets surpassing 8 million address holdings.

Smaller holding amounts now place investors into higher distribution brackets due to past price consolidation.

XRP Wallet Wealth Distribution Tiers: Top 10% requires 2,151 XRP (roughly €2,000), Top 5% requires 7,500 XRP, Top 4% requires 10,000 XRP, Top 3% requires 14,000 XRP, Top 1% requires 44,000 XRP (approximately €41,000).

Across the broader market, lower-cap altcoins continue to experience severe divergence, with single-day movements swinging over 30 percent in selective assets.
