Joey Logano will start Sunday's Hollywood Casino 400 from the pole at Kansas Speedway after heavy rain wiped out NASCAR Cup Series practice and qualifying on Saturday.
Officials used NASCAR's metric formula, which combines owner standings position and previous race performance, to set the grid for the fourth postseason Chase race.
Kyle Larson will line up second on the front row, a strong starting spot as he holds a one-point lead over Denny Hamlin in the championship standings.
Hamlin, second in the title race, will begin the 400-mile event from sixth.
Only four drivers completed early practice laps before rain halted all track activity.
Chase Elliott led that brief session at 178.932 mph, followed by Hamlin at 175.290 mph, Logano at 172.601 mph and Alex Bowman at 164.178 mph.
Playoff Contenders Face Mixed Starting Positions
The cancellation marks the third time in four Chase races that qualifying has been called off.
Among playoff contenders, Elliott will start 18th, Chase Briscoe 23rd and Ryan Blaney 25th.
Starting up front matters at the 1.5-mile track, where 12 of the past 13 Cup races have been won by drivers starting inside the top ten.
Drivers will take their first green-flag laps of the weekend at the start of Sunday's race, which opens three consecutive postseason events on 1.5-mile intermediate tracks.
