Nikolaj Ehlers scored 3:29 into overtime on Saturday to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at Lenovo Center, leveling the Eastern Conference Final at one game apiece.

The victory followed a 6-2 Game 1 loss by the Hurricanes, who rebounded at home after being heavily outshot and outplayed in the series opener on Thursday.

Carolina established an early lead 2:33 into the first period when forward Eric Robinson deflected a long shot by William Carrier past Dobes.

Montreal responded midway through the opening frame when Josh Anderson converted a centering pass from Phillip Danault off a defenseman's skate into the top corner of the net.

The Hurricanes broke the 1-1 tie late in the second period through a solo effort by Ehlers, who navigated past Montreal defenders to slip the puck through the legs of Dobes.

Anderson answered again for the Canadiens with 7:09 remaining in regulation, scoring from a goal-mouth scramble to force the extra period.

Carolina controlled the statistical matchup throughout the evening, outshooting Montreal 26-12 and registering a 58.54 percent expected goals rate according to Natural Stat Trick.

Defensively, the Hurricanes limited Montreal to 12 shots on net, blocked 19 attempts, and received an assist and a plus-3 rating from defenseman Jaccob Slavin over 29 shifts.
