Great Bridge captured the Class 5 Region A baseball championship with an 8-4 extra-inning victory over Cox on Wednesday.

The Wildcats avenged their regional semifinal loss from last season by outlasting the Falcons in a nine-inning battle.

This regional title is the first postseason championship for Great Bridge, giving the team strong momentum heading into the state tournament.

Great Bridge took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Cox tied the game when Trip Faison stole second and scored on an infield error.

In the second inning, Nathan Matheny drove in Preston Powell with an RBI single to put Great Bridge ahead 2-1.

Cox answered in the bottom half when Travis Payman singled home Colin Quilter to make it 2-2.

The score remained tied until the fifth inning, when Clemson commit Cole Cinnamond hit a two-run home run to right field, giving Great Bridge a 4-2 lead.

Cox responded in the bottom of the fifth as VCU commit Hank Brown delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-3.

The Falcons tied the game again in the sixth on an RBI single by Owen Walrod that scored Payman.

Neither team scored in the seventh or eighth innings, sending the game to extras.

Great Bridge broke the deadlock in the ninth with four consecutive runs.

The Wildcats then held Cox scoreless in the bottom half to seal the 8-4 victory and bring the region title back to Chesapeake.
