Los Angeles Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz is making steady progress in his recovery from elbow surgery and could return to the mound around the All-Star break, according to manager Dave Roberts.

Diaz underwent a procedure more than a month ago to remove loose bodies from his elbow, which had caused him to struggle in early outings this season.

The right-hander signed a $69 million contract with the Dodgers to anchor the bullpen.

Manager Dave Roberts said Diaz has completed back-to-back pitching sessions and is responding well to the rehab program.

“He’s progressing really nicely, all positive with Edwin,” Roberts said.

Recovery from this type of surgery typically takes two to three months, placing a potential return around midseason.

Diaz will gradually increase his throwing distance before eventually getting on the mound.

Comparison with Blake Snell

Starting pitcher Blake Snell also dealt with loose bodies in his elbow but underwent a different surgical procedure just two weeks ago.

That alternative method could allow Snell to resume throwing sooner than the usual one-month recovery timeline, potentially enabling a faster return than Diaz.

Both recovery cases will provide the Dodgers with valuable medical data to refine treatment strategies for future elbow injuries.
