India handed a Test debut to 23-year-old left-arm spinner Manav Suthar during the one-off match against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on June 6, 2026.

The selection marks a transitional shift for India, as the squad rested long-standing spin staples Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja together for the first time since November 2010.

Suthar earned his position over Harsh Dubey, who was the leading wicket-taker in the recent Ranji Trophy season.

Suthar entered the match with strong red-ball credentials, having claimed 129 wickets across 29 first-class matches for Rajasthan.

Strategic Planning for Busy Schedule

Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first under grueling climate conditions.

"We are gonna bat first. Very hot and humid.

It's going to get slower and lower. Very special, I grew up playing here.

It's a great privilege to captain here," said Gill.

"We've got Manav Suthar making his debut," he added.

The strategic deployment of Suthar aligns with India's long-term planning for a busy upcoming schedule that includes red-ball series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia.

Team selectors finalized the lineup to evaluate bench depth in the spin department.

"This is perhaps the only Test match where we can have a look at someone who could be our fourth spinner.

Because after this, we go to Sri Lanka, and we might have to carry four spinners," said head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Suthar previously drew praise from senior players, including his idol Ravichandran Ashwin, who highlighted Suthar's unique ability to generate high rotation speed on the ball.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan entered the fixture under new leadership, looking to test their own red-ball development in India.

"We wanted to bat as well, as the wicket looks good. We need to play good cricket.

We are ready for the challenge," said Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi.
